Akshay Kumar - The 'Kinng' of IIFA!

It was touted as the biggest act at the IIFA Awards in Bangkok, and it was!

The 'kinng' Akshay Kumar, stole the thunder during the grand finale of the recently concluded IIFA awards. As the fireworks blazed and the audience screamed with delight, superstar Akshay Kumar descended on the stage, sliding swiftly across a cable from the extreme end of the auditorium.

Clad in a 'pagdi' and snazzy overcoat, his get-up in SINGH IS KINNG, he was soon joined by a pack of dancers, dressed as sardars, roaring the name of his upcoming release. Among others, he danced on the title track from SINGH IS KINNG, leaving the Thais absolutely bedazzled!

Remarks Akshay, of his exemplary stage performance, 'I'm glad the performance drew a thunderous applause, as the crowd seemed to enjoy it. From the stage, all I could see were just flashing lights though! I hope my audience enjoys SINGH IS KINNG as much as they enjoyed my act. It was only a glimpse of what is to come....'

A Studio 18 release SINGH IS KINNG is set to hit the screens worldwide on August 8 and previews in select locations on August 7.

Akshay to get a Doctorate

Akshay Kumar has many reasons to celebrate. The man had four releases last year and all the films were superhit at the Box Office. This year, his first release 'Tashan' failed to create the same magic but Akshay did walk away with loads of praises for his performance. The actor will soon be making his appearance on the small screen as well by hosting a reality show called 'Fear Factor- Khatron Ke Khiladi'. And if this was not enough, Akki will now be receiving an honorary doctorate from a Canadian University.

"The University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, will bestow Akshay Kumar with an honorary doctorate on May 9. It's basically for all the social work that he has done in Canada. The University called him up to present him the doctorate," says Akshay's spokesperson.
In the recent past, such kind of honorary doctorates from foreign Universities were given to film personalities like Yash Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Shilpa Shetty.

Salman and Akshay all set for big debut on smallscreen

Let me state the obvious one more time: no one can get away from Bollywood, least of all television. Take a look at what’s happening right now. Shah Rukh Khan is already doing Kya Aaap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain for Star Plus. We will soon see Salman Khan in Dus Ka Dum on Sony Entertainment Television or, as Salman calls it, “Sony Innertainmen Television.” How any of us will understand a word of what he’s saying I don’t know - if he persists in speaking with that bizarre accent. Which of course he will, because he always does when he’s speaking in English. Maybe the channel will provide sub-titles. (Hint, hint. Or more accurately: Help!).

But I think it’s actually quite an amazing breakthrough in television terms to choose as host for a game show a man whom you are sure knows none of the answers and can take lessons from even the most ignorant viewer. Think about it. If it works, then this could start a global trend in shows where participants were encouraged by the knowledge that no matter how badly they did, the anchor would do even worse.

The third big star coming soon on TV is Akshay Kumar, who will be hosting the Indian version of Fear Factor for the new Viacom entertainment channel. Thankfully, what Akshay needs to display on this show are not his intellectual skills. Salman on the other hand is the true trend setter with the Indianised Power of Ten.

At the local level, the possibilities are endless. Given Star News’s obsession with the great Khali, perhaps its sister channel Star Plus could get Khali to host a quiz show. First question would be asked to a contestant. If he got it wrong, then it would be asked to Khali. When he got it wrong, he would body slam the contestant, give him an aeroplane spin, immobilize him with a Boston Crab and then get disqualified for breaking rules.

And finally. Sometimes, the best ideas can go wrong. When I first heard that Manish Arora was going to anchor a programme on Discovery Travel & Living, I thought it was a brilliant idea. There’s lots to be said about Indian fashion and Arora seems to have the mad, unselfconscious energy required to make such a programme work.

Then I saw the show. And I have to confess, I was underwhelmed. Partly it’s the production. Whoever made the series should sit down and watch the foreign programmes on Travel & Living. This show is poorly scripted and frankly, rather dull. Partly it’s Arora himself. Television is a strange medium. People you think are annoying in real life seem energetic and charismatic on TV. And people you think are fun end up looking boring. I think it is safe to say that whatever Arora’s skills as a designer, television is not his medium. Nor is the camera his friend.

But if Travel & Living gets it wrong, then at least the mother channel gets it right. I’ve been really enjoying The Story of India on Discovery. Michael Wood who made the series – for British TV to mark 60 years of Indian independence – is one of the masters of that relatively new TV genre in which an academic (such as Simon Schama whose shows are often on BBC World) takes on a theme that is rich in ideas and fills it out by making a film that’s a cross between a documentary and a personal report, full of views, insights and information.

The episode I saw traced immigration into India 70,000 years ago, and actually tracked down people in south India with the same DNA; and told us about priests in Kerala who chant in a ‘language’ (or maybe it’s just bird sounds) not known to anyone today, it’s that ancient. Really fascinating stuff.

Akshay is a happy singh

After an ordinary weekend, Monday had a clear enough tale to tell for Tashan. The film's word of mouth has reached an abysmal low and this Yash Raj film now is under threat of coming close to the first week's collections of the likes of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (for which the end box office outcome read a flop in the final run).

Still, in spite of such unforeseen fate of the film, Akshay Kumar is smiling and continuing to keep 'happy'. How is that possible? Well, the name of the character that he plays in his forthcoming film is called - hold your breath - Happy Singh!

Yes, that's true! In Anees Bazmee's Singh is Kinng which has an out and out Punjabi flavor to it, Akshay Kumar is known as Happy Singh while Sonu Sood is named Lucky Singh. It is a known fact that names like Happy Singh and Lucky Singh are pretty much in vogue in the state of Punjab and for a film like Singh is Kinng it is only justified to have two of its principal protagonists carrying the same names.

With Singh is Kinng just about three months away, Akshay Kumar certainly would be looking forward to some 'happy' times ahead after the Tashan fiasco
